Stop guessing
timelines.

Get data-driven estimates your AI can actually use.

26 MCP tools. 30-second install. Works with Claude Code, Cursor, Codex CLI, Cline, Zed, and any MCP client.

Terminal
$ claude mcp add epoch -- npx @kyanitelabs/epoch

Sound Familiar?

You've tried everything else

Your AI is powerful. But when it comes to "how long will this take?" — it guesses. Badly.

Asking AI directly

"This will take 2 hours." Two days later, you're still waiting. LLMs hallucinate timelines because they can't perceive time.

Prompt engineering

You craft the perfect estimation prompt. It works once. The next time, it gives a completely different answer. Inconsistent and unreliable.

Gut feelings

Software projects run 2–10x over estimate. LLMs replicate and amplify human optimism bias. The result: agentic overconfidence.

Research backs this up: A UPenn study showed 4% deal closure under wall-clock limits vs 99% under turn-based limits. Injecting explicit time state produced an 8x improvement.

The Solution

40 years of estimation research,
packaged for AI

We studied PERT, COCOMO II, Monte Carlo, reference class forecasting — every major estimation method — and distilled them into 26 structured tools that AI agents can call like functions.

Without Epoch
  • AI estimates in token budgets, not minutes
  • Events 10 tokens apart are identical whether 1 second or 1 hour apart
  • No feedback loop — the same errors repeat forever
With Epoch
  • Grounded estimates using proven algorithms, not guesses
  • 30-second install, zero config, no API keys
  • Self-improving — gets more accurate with every estimate

Claude + Epoch

How long will a 15K LOC project take with a team of 5?

Claude calls cocomo_estimate, pert_estimate, critical_path

Based on COCOMO II estimation:

Effort: 45 person-months Duration: 8.3 months Risk Level: medium Estimated Cost: ~$340K

Confidence: 72% · Method: COCOMO II + PERT blend

The Guarantee

Free forever. Open source. No lock-in.

The code is public. Audit it yourself. Telemetry is off by default. Every data point is documented.

Off by Default

Telemetry requires explicit opt-in. Preview exactly what will be shared before enabling.

Zero PII

No names, emails, project names, or company data. Dates truncated to day-only.

Self-Hostable

Configurable endpoint. Run your own telemetry server. Full API contract documented.

FAQ

Common questions

Does it work with Cursor, Codex CLI, Cline, and other tools?
Yes. Epoch works with any MCP-compatible client including Claude Code, Cursor, Codex CLI, Cline, Zed, Windsurf, VS Code, and any tool supporting the Model Context Protocol. The same 26 tools are available everywhere.
Is it really free?
Yes. Epoch is Apache-2.0-licensed open source. Free forever. No usage limits, no API keys required, no lock-in. The code is public — you can audit it, fork it, or self-host.
Does it slow down my AI?
No. Epoch runs as an external MCP tool. Tool calls add milliseconds, not seconds. Your AI calls the tools only when it needs an estimate — the rest of the time, it runs exactly as before.
What if my team is remote across timezones?
Epoch has full timezone support with IANA timezone conversion, holiday-aware business day calculations for 5 countries (US, UK, FR, DE, JP), and date arithmetic built in. Ask "how many business days between New York and Tokyo deadlines?" and get an accurate answer.
What estimation methods does Epoch use?
PERT three-point estimation, COCOMO II (with LLM-adapted cost drivers), Monte Carlo simulation, reference class forecasting, critical path method, and sprint velocity forecasting. Each method has been calibrated against historical project data.
How does self-improvement work?
Every estimate generates a feedback token. Record the actual hours when the work is done, and Epoch auto-calibrates correction factors for that task type and complexity. After 5+ matched pairs per task type, self-improvement kicks in automatically. More data = better estimates.
